It turned out to be a better ride than I could’ve possibly hoped for. “When I first took the (girls’ basketball) job at Bullock Creek 20 years ago, they hadn’t had a long history of success, and I had a long-term goal of building an elite program. When you coach in one spot for a long time, you build long-term relationships,” he said. “I’ve been to weddings of former players and had the chance to meet the kids of former players. “ … I thought about how fulfilling it was to (turn things around) in volleyball, and I’d like to have that same experience again.”įreeland said the one thing he will miss most about coaching the girls is “definitely the relationships you build.” It was more of a long-term decision,” he added. “It was not a matter of picking one team over the other in the short term. I’m not anywhere near being ready to be done coaching, and having the fresh challenge of building the boys’ program into a winner over the next 10 years was appealing to me,” he explained. “Honestly, as I told the girls, it was really a decision based on me looking down the road and deciding what I wanted to do for the next 10 years.
